Building Networks & Relationships, Job Hunting

How to build relationships with potential employers to find a job as an immigrant is one of the most common questions and request for assistance which I receive from potential immigrants.

The Relationship Building Strategy and networking for immigrants is especially hard from a distance.

This video is a quick training video about the Relationship Building Strategy which I teach in my programs and coaching to clients.

In this video I will show you how to build relationships with potential employers to find a job as an immigrant and also give you some options for personalised assistance from me.

Relationship Building Is A Process

Relationship building is nothing but a process.

Let me explain: Think about establishing relationships with any of your loved ones – a wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend or anyone close to you,

Knowingly or unknowingly you went through a process to establish that relationship.

How to build relationships with potential employers to find a job is no different and it follows the same steps as in an intimate or romantic relationship.

If you have watched any of my other videos or read any of my articles, then you will see that this strategy is one of the most effective strategies to land a job as an immigrant.

It is especially powerful for people who want a job in another country, but who are not in skills shortage areas.

The Relationship building strategy is also so effective because it overcomes the common obstacles which immigrants face.

These are the steps in the Relationship Building Process:

Step 1: How To Build Relationships With Potential Employers To Find a Job – Identifying Your Targets First

Here you need to identify who you want to connect to or build a relationship with in your destination country.

This is one of the hardest parts of this process – most people have no idea of how to do the in-depth research in establishing their “targets” or identifying who to connect to and build relationships with in their destination country. It is a very important part of how to build relationships with potential employers to find a job as an immigrant.

It was very much the same when you first had to identify who you wanted to meet and establish an intimate or relationship with! No targets…no relationships!

Step 2: Connecting

You will now have to connect with those people that you have identified as potential connections in your destination country.

The way that people connect in a professional platform, is usually in a social media platform like LinkedIn.

You can create a unique immigrant’s LinkedIn profile to help you do that.

Using a unique immigrant’s LinkedIn profile correctly and effectively is one of the most powerful was in how to build relationships with potential employers to find a job as an immigrant.

Just a warning: Just sending connecting requests and messages in LinkedIn, is the least effective way to connect to the right people. A Unique Immigrant’s LinkedIn profile will teach you the backdoor ways of connecting, without sending these annoying messages that is perceived as “cold calling”.

Step 3: How To Build Relationships With Potential Employers To Find a Job By Engagement and Interaction

This is where most people make their mistake – stopping at step 2 above.

Most people never go to engagement and interaction. You will have to apply a few clever ways of engaging and interacting with those connections which you have established and which will be influential helping you land a job as an immigrant.

Relationship building is not just connecting!

If you want to be successful and know how to build relationships with potential employers to find a job as an immigrant – then you will need to learn how to engage and interact.

Step 4: Reciprocity

Reciprocity refers to “giving and receiving”. In other words, a consistent interaction where interest and even valuable insights and assistance are exchanged between parties.

Step 5: Building Trust

Reciprocity leads to the establishment of trust. When you gain someone’s trust, they will open up to you, consider you for jobs maybe not even advertised, or above other candidates.

Other’s may have better qualifications and skills – but you will be the more trusted candidate and stand out head and shoulders above the rest.

This is where shoulder taps happen and you might have no competition when being asked to apply for a job.

This is the best place to be in how to build relationships with potential employers to find a job as an immigrant.

Here, a positive attitude, enthusiasm and interest will carry much further than skills, qualifications and experience.

Step 6: Consistent Communication

No relationship will ever survive unless there is a consistent stream of communication between parties. You need to keep the communication channels open with the other party and keep their trust.

This Relationship Building Process is part of the wider Relationship Building Strategy which we teach to clients of our Q Jumper Factor Programs.

    1. Thank you for your message.
      This is what I recommend:
First: Determine your eligibility to immigrate to your New Zealand (if you have not already) – which visa/PR, etc you qualify for:
Look at the immigration requirements : (free eligibility assessment at the immigration website below) or speak to a licensed adviser (find one as below)
Eligibility assessments can be done at the official immigration pages:

      For New Zealand: http://www.immigration.govt.nz

You can find licensed immigration advisers here:

      New Zealand: http://www.iaa.govt.nz

That will give you an idea of which visa/PR you qualify for.

      2. Get “document ready” – once you know the visa/PR you qualify for – it will indicate which documents, etc you will need for the process – get those ready asap as far as you can.

N.B. It is very, very important to do the above BEFORE you start job search.
