So, back to part II – Why it is so important that you learn how to get into the candidates’ pools of overseas employers?
Well, I showed you this picture before and explained the usual process which most overseas employers follow when recruiting new staff.
I also explained that they would
rather pick people from their pool,
interview people who are referred of round inside their network, or advertise informally rather than advertising formally on online job boards like SEEK in New Zealand and Australia and LinkedIn job.
Why is this?
The reasons overseas employers would not advertise formally
Cost: Overseas employers avoid spending time and money on recruiting and advertising. It costs around $1,000 per month for one job ad on a popular job listing website for an employer. That is expensive for a small employer. It also costs about 30% of your first year’s salary for that employer to get a recruiter to find talent for them. Most small employers can simply not afford it, so they employ other means of finding talent.
Time – it takes a lot of time for overseas employers to go through the usual recruitment process of advertising the job, waiting for applications, selecting the best applications, running interviews, checking references, etc. Most employers want to skip some of these steps by employing someone they already know or trust or have been referred to them. It is just quicker and easier.
Trust: It is proven that people who are referred by someone already working in the business, is 22 times more likely to be interviewed and employed, than someone who is applying from outside the business and circle of trust.
So these are the reasons it is so important that YOU get into these 3 places where employers will be focusing when you are looking to find overseas employment:
– Their pool of existing candidates that they will be picking from.
– Their network of trusted connections inside the organisation, and
– Possibly knowing where they will add or advertise the job where most people will not see the job ad.
The Pool of Candidates – Important If You Want To Find Overseas Employment
The pool of existing candidates is the MOST important part of this.
Once a hiring manager has a vacancy, he/she will run down to HR department and ask about who is available in the pool of candidates.
Even small businesses will first think about who they already know about, and who is available. That is the pool of available candidates.
It is the first place that employers go to, and that is where you should be, so you can be found when they start looking into their candidates’ pools.
In the next video of this miniseries, I will show you what tools you need to get into this pool and start your quest to find overseas employment.
And then in the following video, I will show you the steps of how to enter this pool.
